Born from well to do parents, the painter and draughtsman Albertus Brondgeest was a pupil of Jan Hulswit, Pieter Gerardus van Os, Hermanus Numan and Wouter Johannes van Troostwijk. He was an art dealer and member of Arte et Amicitia (De Kunstkrans) and the Amsterdam Teekengezelschap Zonder Wet of Spreuk (Drawing Society without Law or Saying) of which only one drawing is known with the annotation "Zonder Wet of Spreuk" by Brondgeest.
Here Brondgeest met on mondays between November and March to draw after clothed living models, together with fourteen fellow draughtsmen amongst which were Jean Bernard, Hendrik Stokvisch, P.G van Os, G.J.J. van Os, Jan Hulswit, Jan Dasveldt, Abraham Johannes Ruytenschildt, Wouter Johannes van Troostwijk and Gerrit Jan Michaëlis. Most drawings by this drawing society are in red chalk. Drawings from the society were frequently used as staffage in paintings by their members.
This drawing, just like the other in situ drawing by Brondgeest in our collection in identical media has clearly been drawn with the greatest pleasure of draughtmanship. The abundant joy of drawing cheerfully expressed by the sparkling sunlight, creating a frank stage of shadows on this gate to an unknown castle.
Brondgeest was an art dealer and had a large stock of 17th century paintings from which he drew inspiration for his own drawings and paintings. Numerous drawings and paintings by Brondgeest are preserved in the collections of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and Teylers Museum Haarlem. Recently a handul of drawings by Brondgeest were sold in the rooms of Sotheby's, Amsterdam, from the collection. I.Q. van Regteren Altena.
