Arnoldus Johannes Eymer (Amsterdam 1803-1863 Haarlem) The artist's dog and painting utensils

The Amsterdam born Arnoldus was initially trained and active as a real estate agent, who painted in his spare time. In 1834 he decided to change his career and dedicated himself fully to painting. drawing and also made lithographs. He had an apprenticeship to Cornelis Steffelaar (1797-1861), though it is unknown in which years. From 1835 to 1836, Eymer made a Grand Tour trip to Bad Bentheim and the Harz Mountains in Germany, where he produced landscape paintings. After his study trip Eymer moved to Haarlem, where he lived until his death in 1863.

The present small painting is of a most personal and intimate nature. With a mountainous landscape in the far distance (very well possible Germany, which would date our painting between 1835 and 1836) Arnoldus painted his painting utensils, with shadow standard, drawing portfolio, painter's stick, brush sleeve and bag. He is accompanied by his dog, who seems to be dozing instead of guarding the possessions of his boss.
